The Armenian Catholic Mesrobian High School took the first and fundamental step towards the implementation of the plan aiming to entirely run the school’s electricity system on solar power.
On September 23, the school’s photovoltaic system, which was built during the past months on the roof of the Hovhannes Boghossian Center next to the school, was successfully tested. The system consists of 170 PV panels with a power of 545W, covering an area of 800 m2 and produces 93 kWp of electricity.
The Principal of Mesrobian, Mr. Gregoire Kaloust, stated that the program pursues two main goals: reducing the school’s electricity costs and keeping the environment clean by reducing carbon emissions. He said that the installation of the photovoltaic system is the first and most important part of the plan to completely replace the school’s electricity supply with solar energy. Currently, the system can produce about 35 MW of solar power per year, thus diminishing the emission of about 28 tons of CO2 and reducing electricity costs to a certain extent, and in the second and final parts of the project, this system will be equipped with rechargeable batteries (lithium batteries) which will make the school’s electricity supply significantly cheaper, more secure, mostly clean and almost completely autonomous.
The construction of Mesrobian College’s photovoltaic system was carried out with the assistance of the ‘Électriciens sans frontières’ organization which backs green power production projects all over the world. The project was supported by the IECD international development organization which, in recent years, has been the most important partner of Mesrobian Technical College in the development of the educational system as well as in infrastructure renovation projects.
The Principal of Mesrobian, expressed his gratitude to the mentioned organizations for supporting this project that has a significant importance in the effective management of the college and which will have a beneficial effect on the educational family and the environment as well.
