Russia considers the peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan necessary. Moscow supports peaceful settlement, as well as border delimitation and complete settlement of the border problem, ARMENPRESS reports, citing “RIA Novosti”, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced during Valdai conference.
“Our position is that the peace agreement is, of course, necessary. And we support peaceful settlement, as well as border delimitation and full settlement of the border problem. We are in favor. The question is which option to choose? this is the business of Armenia, the Armenian people and the leadership of Armenia,” Putin said.
Putin noted that Russia will support any choice of Armenia. According to Putin, the “Washington” version envisages the recognition of Azerbaijan’s sovereignty over Nagorno-Karabakh.
“If Armenia considers it right, then, please, we will support any choice of the Armenian people. If the Armenian people and the leadership of Armenia believe that Karabakh has its own characteristics that should be taken into account and somehow discussed in the future reconciliation agreement, that is also possible.
But, of course, it’s necessary to negotiate with Azerbaijan,” said Putin, emphasizing that the agreements should be acceptable for the other side as well.
The President of the Russian Federation emphasized that whatever option is chosen, if it will lead to peace, Russia will only support it. “We are not going to impose anything, we cannot and we are not going to dictate anything to Armenia,” said the Russian President.
