Global leaders condemned the thousands of protesters in Brazil who stormed the presidential palace, Congress and the Supreme Court in the capital, Brasília, in support of former President Jair Bolsonaro.
Some 300 people were arrested after protesters dressed in Brazil’s national green and yellow colors charged into the country’s most important government buildings Sunday afternoon, smashing windows and furniture and ripping up documents before riot police forced them back into the streets by nightfall.
President Biden called the riot “outrageous,” while leaders in the U.K. and Europe expressed support for President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the leftist leader who took office last week.
Mr. Bolsonaro criticized supporters who stormed government buildings and denied any involvement.
